One of my favorite songs from Chalkduts is “We Kinda Leader.” In the song, Chalkdust encourages the major political parties in Trinidad and Tobago to do away with the parliamentary system which the nation inherited from England. Chalkdust explains that the nation’s leader should be selected on the basis of who is willing to endure the struggles and suffering of ordinary people in the nation.

The message of this song is a very profound which is applicable to all nations. The Western electoral system which has spread throughout the world is one which does create a disconnect between the masses and the leaders that they elect. Very often these elected leaders are sheltered from some of the problems which the people who elect them are forced to endure. Chalkdust makes the case that the only way that these problems can truly be resolved is if the leaders themselves are willing to endure them along with the common people.
